Ir. Shahul Hamid has been in the Energy Industry for more than 40 years, mainly with Exxon and Shell, and has held a rotation of assignments in Malaysia and overseas covering a wide variety of technical, financial and commercial aspects of the petroleum value chain and business.
From Aug 2012-September 2020, Ir. Shahul was the MD/CEO of Reach Energy Bhd. which is a public-listed company in Bursa Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange). He was the founding director and had been leading this group since its inception in 2012. He was also concurrently the General Director of Emir Oil LLP in Kazakhstan which is a major subsidiary of Reach Energy Bhd. He is currently the Executive Chairman of Lionstone Energy Sdn Bhd. He also provides business advisory services as well as technical and commercial expertise to Energy Industry clients globally, including the Renewable Energy sector. He is an advocate of Energy Efficiency and has developed an extensive business network globally. He sits on the Boards of selected companies in the Energy Sector.
During 2007-2009, in a Group CEO role, Ir. Shahul set up the Oil & Gas ventures for a Malaysian Group, securing major gas field development opportunities, coupled with LNG business, as well as refinery/petrochemical investments in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Middle East (Total Investment estimated to be circa US$30 Billion). He dealt with top level governmental and oil industry personnel in these countries in leading these efforts. Ir. Shahul worked closely with various international consultants on Feasibility Studies, Conceptual Design, Risk Management, FEED/BED, Detail Design and Procurement.
During 2005-2006, Ir. Shahul was Board Member/Technical Advisor to Ramunia Holdings Bhd (now known as TH Heavy Industries Bhd) which is a public-listed company in Bursa Malaysia involved in oil & gas facilities fabrication and installation.
From Aug 2001 to Oct 2004, Ir. Shahul was the Managing Director of Shell Refining Company Bhd which was a public-listed company in the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia. He was the first Malaysian to be appointed to this position. Prior to that he worked in a variety of roles as General Manager, Technical Manager, Engineering Manager, Operations Manager and Project Manager in Shell and Exxon with core activities cutting across the entire hydrocarbon life cycle covering exploration, appraisal, development, production and decommissioning in very challenging business environments. He also sat in the Boards of Sarawak Shell Bhd and Sabah Shell Petroleum Company and Board Committees. He has had international postings in senior roles in Esso Australia Ltd, Petroleum Development Oman LLC and Emir Oil LLP in Kazakhstan.
Ir. Shahul has been playing lead roles in Corporate Management, Mergers & Acquisition, asset management, risk management, commercial/lease negotiations, business strategies/reviews, business planning, independent audits & reviews, organizational transformation/effectiveness, portfolio management, staff competency development, benchmarking for best practices, HSE management and audits, contracting & procurement, stakeholder/Government liaisons, Joint Venture management, Petroleum & Petroleum Products Trading and ESG advisory.
Ir. Shahul was a Colombo Plan Scholar and holds Bachelor (Honours) and Master degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Adelaide in Australia. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Malaysia and Australia. He has produced many technical reports, papers and reviews. These have been presented in various conferences, workshops, journals and meetings. He co-authored a pioneer research paper on Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) entitled “In situ Determination of Loss and Coupling Loss Factors by the Power Injection Method” which has been widely referenced to date in the Oil & Gas, Aerospace and Automotive industries globally.
Ir. Shahul is one of the two local promoters and Board Member of Mother’s Home International Bhd which is the Malaysian operation of Mother’s Home International Foundation of Kazakhstan involved in charity work to reduce child abandonment and helping orphans.
